Temperature is a primary factor in peptide storage. Lower temperatures reduce molecular motion and slow degradation reactions, but freezing can concentrate solutes and promote aggregation. Lyophilized powders are commonly held at -20°C, whereas solutions are often kept at -80°C. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are harmful because ice crystal formation and pH shifts can damage the peptide. The glass transition temperature of a lyophilized cake influences its stability; below this temperature, molecular mobility is restricted. For solutions, the choice between -20°C and -80°C depends on the peptide's sensitivity and the intended storage duration.
Moisture, oxygen, and light also affect peptide integrity. Lyophilized powders absorb water from the air, which can enable hydrolysis and conformational changes. Oxygen promotes oxidation of sensitive residues, so storage under inert gas or in sealed vials is common. Light exposure can cause photodegradation, particularly for peptides containing aromatic amino acids. Buffer choice and pH influence charge state and solubility; extremes of pH accelerate deamidation and hydrolysis. Adding stabilizers such as sugars or polyols can protect the peptide during freezing and drying. Optimal conditions are determined empirically for each peptide.
Cold-chain shipping uses insulated containers, phase-change packs, and temperature indicators. Dry ice maintains -70 °C or lower but requires venting to avoid pressure buildup. Gel packs provide 2-8 °C for shorter transit. Upon arrival, recipients should record temperature indicators and transfer vials promptly to storage. Deviations from specified conditions should be documented and may require analytical re-check. The effect of a brief temperature excursion is peptide-specific and not always predictable from general rules.
Handling begins with receipt and inspection. Vials should be checked for damage, label integrity, and temperature history. Lyophilized peptides should be allowed to equilibrate to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation. Solutions should be prepared in a clean, calibrated environment using appropriate solvents. Personal protective equipment and containment reduce exposure and contamination. Documentation of lot number, date, and storage location supports traceability. The goal is to limit repeated temperature changes, moisture exposure, and microbial contamination.
Reconstitution solvent depends on peptide solubility and intended use; water, buffer, or small amounts of organic solvent may be needed. After dissolution, solutions are typically aliquoted into single-use portions to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Aliquots are stored at -20 °C or -80 °C, depending on stability. Labels include concentration, solvent, date, and operator. Sterile filtration may be used when microbial control is required, but filters can adsorb peptides. The optimal concentration and solvent are often determined empirically.

In aqueous solution, peptides are vulnerable to hydrolysis, oxidation, deamidation, and aggregation, with rates influenced by pH, temperature, buffer composition, and ionic strength. Acidic or neutral pH ranges often slow deamidation, while extreme pH can accelerate peptide bond cleavage. Dissolved oxygen and redox-active metal ions contribute to oxidation of methionine, cysteine, and tryptophan residues. Aggregation may be driven by hydrophobic interactions or by interfaces such as air-liquid and container surfaces. Because these pathways interact, solution storage usually requires tighter control than storage of dried material.
Temperature is the most common controlled variable, but its effect is not linear. Lower temperatures reduce most chemical reaction rates, yet freezing can concentrate solutes and create pH shifts in the remaining liquid phase. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can denature or aggregate some peptides, especially those with hydrophobic segments. For lyophilized powders, desiccation and protection from moisture are often more important than deep freezing. For solutions, the choice between refrigeration and freezing depends on peptide concentration, buffer components, and the intended duration of storage.
After reconstitution, solutions are divided into single-use aliquots and stored at -80°C. Labels include peptide name, concentration, buffer composition, date, and lot number. Freeze-thaw cycles are minimized by thawing only the needed aliquot on ice or at room temperature. Some peptides benefit from the addition of a carrier protein, such as bovine serum albumin, or a cryoprotectant like glycerol to reduce adsorption to plastic. Glass vials with low-binding surfaces are preferred for dilute solutions. Shipping of frozen aliquots uses dry ice and insulated containers to maintain the cold chain.
Receiving a peptide shipment requires immediate inspection of the packaging and temperature indicators. Any deviation from the specified cold chain should be documented and investigated. Upon arrival, solid peptides are generally kept at -20°C, whereas liquid formulations are stored at -80°C. Vials should be kept upright and protected from light. Repeated warming and cooling of the entire container is avoided by preparing smaller working aliquots. A log of lot numbers, receipt dates, and storage locations supports traceability and quality control.
Vegetables can be eaten either raw or cooked and play an important role in human nutrition, being mostly low in fat and carbohydrates, but high in vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Many nutritionists encourage people to consume plenty of fruit and vegetables, five or more portions a day often being recommended.
== Nutrition == Sake kasu is a highly nutritious by-product of sake providing protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins (including some B vitamins), fiber, ash, peptides, and amino acids. It has also been found that sake kasu has the potential to reduce the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and an extract has potential to be used as a treatment. According to a science television program, "Tameshite Gatten", that aired on NHK in Japan, it was explained that the fiber and resistant protein in sake kasu can reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and amino acids. Whether sake kasu is heat-dried or freeze-dried, there is little difference in nutritional value between the two drying methods. With heat-dried sake kasu there are more free amino acids, whereas the freeze-dried sake kasu contains more S-adenosyl methionine. The degradation of microbial metabolites during heat-drying sake kasu can cause an increase in the amount of nucleic acid-related components. When feeding aging mice with sake kasu, the branched-chain amino acid level is high in different parts of the mice including the plasma, brain, and muscle. Based on the experiment, it is believed that consuming sake kasu may be beneficial towards the elderly in maintaining brain tissue and motor functions. Fermented sake kasu is produced by introducing lactic acid bacteria to the sake kasu during the fermentation process. Consuming fermented sake kasu can suppress type I allergic reaction and allergic rhinitis-like symptoms.
The Vietnam National Games (Vietnamese: Đại hội Thể thao toàn quốc, lit. 'National Sports Games') is a major national multi-sport event normally held in Vietnam once every four years (previously once held every five years from 1985 to 1995), organised by the Sports Authority of Vietnam (Vietnamese: Cục Thể Dục thể thao Việt Nam, lit. 'Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports'). The inaugural Games took place in 1985 in Hanoi, and the most recent was held in 2022 in Quảng Ninh. Almost every sports delegations representing provinces, cities, ministries, and sectors that have participated in the Games throughout history have won at least one medal in every edition, except for four delegations: Hà Tuyên, Nam Hà, Nghĩa Bình và Thuận Hải, which have never won any medals; these were all former provinces that have now been dissolved, forming eight successor administrative units: Hà Giang and Tuyên Quang (separated from Hà Tuyên), Nam Định and Hà Nam (separated from Nam Hà), Quảng Ngãi and Bình Định (separated from Nghĩa Bình), Bình Thuận and Ninh Thuận (separated from Thuận Hải). After becoming independent, these provinces continued to send athletes to participate as separate sports delegations, and it was from this point that they began to achieve their first significant successes. The Games have been held in 5 provinces & cities: five times in Hanoi (1985, 1990, 1995, 2002, 2018), and once each in Đà Nẵng (2010), Nam Định (now Ninh Bình) (2014), Quảng Ninh (2022), and Ho Chi Minh City (2006).
=== Holly Newman === Holly Newman (Anna Wilson-Jones) is the widow of Eric's first boss and mentor, Newman. She and Eric reconnect after Newman's death when Eric visits the New York office, and Eric secretly cheats on his wife with Holly before flying back to London.
=== Symbiosis === Once the fungal hyphae make contact with root cap cells, they must continue to grow inwards to the epidermal cells and multiply to form the layers that will eventually produce the mantle. Production of the fungal mantle involves the upregulation of genes responsible for translation and cell growth, as well as those responsible for membrane synthesis and function, such as hydrophobins. Some polypeptides are only found when the fungus and plant have achieved symbiosis; these symbiosis-related (SR) proteins are termed ectomycorrhizins. Major changes in polypeptide and mRNA synthesis happen rapidly after colonization by the fungus, including the production of ectomycorrhizins. Changes include the upregulation of genes that may help new membranes to form at the symbiotic interface. The effect of the mantle on root proliferation, root hair development and dichotomous branching can be partially mimicked by fungal exudates, providing a path to identifying the molecules responsible for communication. The Hartig net initially forms from the fully differentiated inner layer of the mantle, and penetration occurs in a broad front oriented at right angles to the root axis, digesting through the apoplastic space. Some plant cells respond by producing stress- and defense-related proteins including chitinases and peroxidases that could inhibit Hartig net formation.

Symptoms of estrogen overdosage may include nausea, vomiting, bloating, increased weight, water retention, breast tenderness, vaginal discharge, heavy legs, and leg cramps. These side effects can be diminished by reducing the estrogen dosage.
The 2014 Ebola outbreak killed more than 11,300 people. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as of January 2020, this is the second largest outbreak with over 3,400 confirmed or probable cases, including more than 2,200 deaths. Regeneron used its VelociGene, VelocImmune, and VelociMab antibody discovery and production technologies and coordinated with the U.S. government's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). The therapy was developed in 6 months and a Phase 1 trial in healthy humans was completed in 2015.
At least three isotopes of iodine are important. 129I, 131I (radioiodine) and 132I. Open air nuclear testing and the Chernobyl disaster both released iodine-131. The short-lived isotopes of iodine are particularly harmful because the thyroid collects and concentrates iodide – radioactive as well as stable. Absorption of radioiodine can lead to acute, chronic, and delayed effects. Acute effects from high doses include thyroiditis, while chronic and delayed effects include hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer. It has been shown that the active iodine released from Chernobyl and Mayak has resulted in an increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer in the former Soviet Union. One measure which protects against the risk from radio-iodine is taking a dose of potassium iodide (KI) before exposure to radioiodine. The non-radioactive iodide "saturates" the thyroid, causing less of the radioiodine to be stored in the body. Administering potassium iodide reduces the effects of radio-iodine by 99% and is a prudent, inexpensive supplement to fallout shelters. A low-cost alternative to commercially available iodine pills is a saturated solution of potassium iodide. Long-term storage of KI is normally in the form of reagent-grade crystals. The administration of known goitrogen substances can also be used as a prophylaxis in reducing the bio-uptake of iodine, (whether it be the nutritional non-radioactive iodine-127 or radioactive iodine, radioiodine - most commonly iodine-131, as the body cannot discern between different iodine isotopes).
== Side effects == A significant side effect of insulin therapy is hypoglycemia. A meta-analysis of clinical trials published in July 2012 found 39 to 47.9 events of hypoglycemia (defined as blood glucose <56 mg/dL) per patient year, with higher rates in the more concentrated degludec formulation. Rates of nocturnal hypoglycemia ranged from 3.7 to 5.1 events per patient year. A more recent Cochrane systematic review found there was no significant differences in rates of diurnal, nocturnal hypoglycemia or any other studies outcomes when using insulin degludec as compared to insulin glargine, insulin detemir and NPH insulin for the management of type 1 diabetes in either adults or children.

The Azanian People's Liberation Army admitted to killing ten policemen in 1986 in Sharpeville alone, and in the first half of 1987 the police recorded that their members in the Vaal Triangle had been the victims of thirty-eight incidents of arson, thirty-one incidents of "intimidation", and thirty-nine incidents of stoning. In some cases, attacks on policemen were retributive, with policemen accused of having carried out assassinations of or other attacks on local political activists; residents of Sharpeville also claimed that the police themselves engaged in retributive attacks, creating a "cycle of violence". Research suggests that school principals – particularly unpopular ones and those seen to be aiding the police – were an additional target for attacks from about January 1986 onwards.
microtubule Any of the long, generally straight, hollow tubes, about 24 nanometers in diameter and composed of interwoven polymeric filaments of the protein tubulin, found in the cytoplasm of many eukaryotic cells, where they are involved in maintaining the cell's shape and structural integrity as well as in force generation for cellular or organellar locomotion (as with cilia and flagella). They also comprise the spindle apparatus critical to mitosis and meiosis. Microtubules are rigid but transient all-purpose structural members which can be rapidly assembled and disassembled at the cell's needs. Many different microtubule-associated proteins interact with them. See also microfilament.
Phlebotonics of heterogeneous composition, consisting partly of citrus peel extracts (flavonoids, such as hesperidin) and synthetic compounds, are used to treat chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids. Some are non-prescription dietary supplements, such as diosmin, while one other – Vasculera (Diosmiplex) – is a prescription medical food intended for treating venous disorders. Their mechanism of action is undefined, and clinical evidence of benefit for using phlebotonics to treat venous diseases is limited.
== Predicted protein structures == Having proposed a model of globular proteins, Wrinch investigated whether it was consistent with the available structural data. She hypothesized that bovine tuberculin protein (523) was a C1 closed cyclol consisting of 72 residues and that the digestive enzyme pepsin was a C2 closed cyclol of 288 residues. These residue-number predictions were difficult to verify, since the methods then available to measure the mass of proteins were inaccurate, such as analytical ultracentrifugation and chemical methods. Wrinch also predicted that insulin was a C2 closed cyclol consisting of 288 residues. Limited X-ray crystallographic data were available for insulin which Wrinch interpreted as "confirming" her model. However, this interpretation drew rather severe criticism for being premature. Careful studies of the Patterson diagrams of insulin taken by Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin showed that they were roughly consistent with the cyclol model; however, the agreement was not good enough to claim that the cyclol model was confirmed.
I reject only the concept that black liberation can be achieved through the leadership of white liberals." He added that "the [white] liberal is no enemy, he's a friend – but for the moment he holds us back, offering a formula too gentle, too inadequate for our struggle". Biko's approach to activism focused on psychological empowerment, and both he and the BCM saw their main purpose as combating the feeling of inferiority that most black South Africans experienced. Biko expressed dismay at how "the black man has become a shell, a shadow of man ... bearing the yoke of oppression with sheepish timidity", and stated that "the most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed". He believed that blacks needed to affirm their own humanity by overcoming their fears and believing themselves worthy of freedom and its attendant responsibilities. He defined Black Consciousness as "an inward-looking process" that would "infuse people with pride and dignity". To promote this, the BCM adopted the slogan "Black is Beautiful". One of the ways that Biko and the BCM sought to achieve psychological empowerment was through community development. Community projects were seen not only as a way to alleviate poverty in black communities but also as a means of transforming society psychologically, culturally, and economically. They would also help students to learn about the "daily struggles" of ordinary black people and to spread Black Consciousness ideas among the population.

Removing water reduces hydrolytic degradation and limits microbial growth. Lyophilized powders are generally more stable at higher temperatures than aqueous solutions. They also tolerate shipping with less risk of degradation.
pH determines the charge state of ionizable groups, which affects solubility and conformational stability. Extremes of pH can accelerate deamidation, hydrolysis, or aggregation. The optimal pH range is peptide-specific and is often identified during formulation development.
Repeated freezing and thawing can cause aggregation, precipitation, or loss of activity. Ice crystal formation and transient pH changes are among the mechanisms. Preparing single-use portions avoids repeated cycling.
No. Allowing the sealed vial to equilibrate to room temperature reduces condensation on the powder. Condensation can introduce moisture and promote degradation. Equilibration usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on vial size.
